Development (WAD) group seeks to help all people. We were set up to work with those of West African origin, but not exclusively. Over time our membership

has widened and we work with the local community form all backgrounds and cultures. WAD’s aims are to:
Integrate people from different backgrounds and minority ethnic groups to break social barriers
improve the quality of life and raise people’s self esteem by organisation meetings and activities such as cultural events like dancing and drumming and sporting and arts activities for all the community
provide information on training, health and social care, crime reduction, employment, benefit advice and volunteering opportunities. Participate in and make links with appropriate partners/networks within Tameside and elsewhere to ensure that black and minority ethnic people and refugees and asylum seekers to have a voice.

    Our Service?

    [divider margintop=”0″ marginbottom=”20″]

    Reduce isolation, stigma and discrimination.

Our members are often isolated and hard to reach people in the community, who may be new to the country. We aim to help by breaking down barriers to integration for West African and other ethnic minority people and support them and empower them to participate actively in their local community. Because of their situation they often need high levels of support.  We do this through various methods such as training, social activities, helping people to access services (Health, housing, immigration) and benefits that are available for them. Our social activities help isolated people, who are in similar positions to meet each other. They develop supportive peer relationships and begin to be more open about their real needs, less ashamed, scared or shy in coming forward. These needs are then grouped where possible and appropriate responses are developed (e.g. provision of IT classes) or individuals are supported to address specific concerns (e.g. help with housing problems). Our user-led approach enables us to get to root causes rather gloss over initial problems as they present themselves. From our social activities, confidence is gained and individuals begin to realise their ambitions (e.g. we have excellent case studies of individuals who have come to the UK who don’t know anybody at all. They feel very unhappy, worried about the future and how to fit in to the community. Through WAD they have built up a support system which enables them to overcome these issues)

    Aims and Objectives

    [divider margintop=”0″ marginbottom=”20″]

We aim to improve the quality of life of African’s and other ethnic minority people living in Tameside and elsewhere by organising meetings and activities like swimming, football, cultural exchanges, dancing and drumming lessons. The committee meets once a month and general meetings are organised when issues need to be raised. We aim to provide information on training, crime reduction, health and social care, employment, benefits advice, volunteering opportunities etc through our Drop-in and One to One sessions. Brief History

W.A.D. came to be as many people found it increasingly difficult to get particular support for people in the BLACK ETHNIC MINORITY group. NGO’s and multiple

charities have canvassed this group but with no real success as there is no real connection with the people or understanding of the people. Read More…
