    Job Role: Freelance Project Coordinator – Heartbeat of Africa

    Part time: 14 hrs per week

    Salary: £15,000

    Term of contract: 18 month  

    Start date: November 2015 – May 2017


    West African Development was set up in 2005 and has been a registered charity since 2009. We are based in Tameside in the North West. Our aim is to integrate people from different backgrounds and minority ethnic groups to break social barriers improve the quality of life and raise people’s selfesteem by organising meetings and activities such as cultural and educational events such dancing and drumming and sporting and arts activities for all the community and provide information on training, health and social care, crime reduction, employment, benefit advice and volunteering opportunities.


    We are proud to announce that we have been successful with a Heritage Lottery Fund, through which we will be running an African heritage programme that will enable, inform and educate our community to better understand the deep rooted culture and traditions of the ‘West African’ countries. As part of the delivery, West African Development is seeking a freelance project coordinator to support with the successful running and outcomes of their ‘Heart Beat of Africa’ programme.


    The Project Coordinator will support the management committee in ensuring work plan delivery over the next 18months, bringing together communities from across Tameside and neighbouring areas to learn more about African customs and traditions. Successful candidate will have experience of working within the third sector, managing voluntary and community programmes to address inequalities affecting African communities and have experience of dialogue, collaboration and partnerships working with various sectors across the area.


    Key areas of responsibility are to provide:

    • Coordination of work plan delivery to meet outcomes
    • Administration and communication support to management committee
    • Support and development of workshop delivery
    • Coordination and management of events
    • Community consultations and reporting

    RESPONSIBLE TO: Management of West African Development.

    Primary Job Function 

    Overall management and coordination of the ‘Heartbeat of Africa’ program ensuring effective delivery and that outcomes are met.

    Working with volunteers, management committee and social media worker to ensure information and marketing is disseminated in a timely manner.

    Promoting the program to communities to build stronger links and partnerships.

    Coordinating and developing deliver of workshops

    Management and supervision of volunteers to undertake assigned roles to support deliver of program.


    Main duties and responsibilities (together with such other related activities as may from time to time be agreed)


    Management and meetings  

    • To coordinate the programme of work ensuring smooth administration and management functions are met.  
    • To provide regular updates to the management committee on the activities and delivery to West African Development management meetings and to raise any concerns and/or issues affecting the programme in advance.  
    • To coordinate capacity building including training, where possible fundraise for capacity building projects
    • To recruit, support, coordinate and supervise volunteers for specific roles. Partnership working 
    • To develop relationship with CVAT and other BME communities to identify ways of working together to support programme deliver at events and workshops. Identifying areas of opportunities to engage working with local communities.  Marketing and Publicity  
    • To communicate with social media worker to publish regular information on website and e-bulletin, to report news items, events, opportunities, useful resources and showcase the work of programme through providing regular up to date reports.
    • Monitoring and Evaluation
    • To support the collection of feedback from events, trips and workshops. Coordinating and monitoring any reports and evaluations.
